![]() ![]() That gives so many layers and nuances to the stories. That gives the author and reader time to explore Mercy’s world, the characters’ backstories, and their relationships with each other. What I love the most about this series is that unlike a lot of urban fantasy series, Mercy doesn’t keep leveling up in each book, in either her abilities or her allies. ![]() Mercy and the pack also discover that lower-level magical beings are disappearing from their territory. In Soul Taken, this 13th book in the series, the leader of the local vampire seethe tells Mercy she needs to find Wulfe, the old and powerful vampire who’s been stalking her. The Mercy Thompson urban fantasy series is one of my must-reads. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. ![]() 5/12/2023 0 Comments Thieftaker by D.B. Jackson![]() Quantities limited! The most important news in the history of our country, having a woman vice presidential nominee, was overshadowed by the fact that we had…well, that we had what we had." The front page of that paper was our story. Somebody in the press got an advance copy, and released it to the New York Post or the Daily News, one of those, the same exact day that Walter Mondale announced he was picking Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate. ![]() ![]() Richard Bleiweiss, Penthouse's then-art director: "The thing about this issue is, it became the biggest news story in the world. So there were guys paying-and this is something I saw with my own eyes-a dollar for a peek. Peter Bloch, Penthouse's then-executive editor: "It was the best-selling issue of Penthouse of all time. How to convey the magnitude of the frenzy? Because my mind is in the past (the mid-eighties) and in the gutter (the porn biz) for reasons that will become clear, I've spent a lot of time thinking about the September 1984 issue of Penthouse. ![]() ![]() ![]() There are only two options that come to mind when I try to discern author intention here: this book is either a treatise for parents "tactfully" trying to get rid of their kids, or the first in a failed series of books, the overarching theme of which is "let's do stupid shit!" They take them to a bear's cave as he is, presumably, in the midst of hibernation, when bears are at their most pissed off and hungry. The parents lead their children gently by the hand right to the threshold of death's door. Finally, rarely, if ever, are the parents depicted as condoning the child's self-destruction. The mistakes characters make should teach children about human folly and the lessons we can glean from the err of our ways. ![]() They make sense to me because they follow three core principles: it's ok to depict kids doing dumb shit, because their mistakes are generally inadvertent. I don't have a big problem with those books. Franklin the Turtle is always doing stupid shit and then whining about it when he gets caught. In The Cat in the Hat, the children are seduced into destroying their entire house, which they know full well will result in mother's unbridled scorn. There are plenty of children's books about self destructive impulses. A Scathing Review of We're Going on a Bear Hunt, aka "The Children's Guide to Passive Suicide"īefore we go any further, a little context: ![]() 5/11/2023 0 Comments Snuff by Eric Enck![]() ![]() ![]() It’s amazing to me that such a psychotic story could be so intelligently written, but Enck and Huber have accomplished this feat. However, I persevered, resisting the urge to shut the book and run to the bathroom to wretch, because of how well the novel is written. This is definitely not a novel for the weak of stomach even I, a tried and true horror fan, had a hard time with many of the passages due to their graphic content. Readers will have to have the ability to step back and take the piece as a whole, to see the greater message about the insane level of brutality in our culture and the effects of abuse on the human psyche it is attempting to deliver, rather than focusing in on each grisly detail. Especially women since this is a novel whose main character is acting out his hatred for women due to the abuse he suffered at the hands of his foster mother in the past. I imagine it will probably be hard for many to get through because of the unimaginable level of brutality that takes place, page after bloodied page. SNUFF is by far the single most disturbing piece of literature I have ever read. ![]() ![]() ![]() This book will appeal to artists and fans of John Howe's work by leading you step-by-step through a range of specially commissioned demonstrations, sketches and finished paintings, some designed specifically for this book, that reveal John's renowned artistic approach in action, plus the techniques and stories behind each.
